Math: We started Unit 3 in Bridges: Addition and Subtraction Within 100. First, I reviewed bundles and sticks which is a tool we use to work on place value. We used them to solve double digit addition sentences.
We also reviewed and practiced how to show your math thinking if you are using the "splitting" strategy.
This past Thursday, I introduced parcels and presents. They are another tool and visual for working on place value.
This week we will be creating our own word problems using parcels and presents.
We have also been working on coin identification. Nickels and dimes are always the hardest for children to remember. Soon we will start practicing counting coins.
On Friday, I introduced and we practiced making time. We will be focusing on making and telling time to the hour and half hour.
In addition to all that I have mentioned already, we continue to work on counting forwards and backwards by 10's from any number. Our goal is to be able to do it from any number from 0-1000.
Reading: I have been doing lessons from our Schoolwide Nonfiction unit. Nonfiction books can be overwhelming to some children because there is a lot of information and features in a nonfiction book. They tend to be more challenging to read than fiction books. I talked to the children about using the techniques of: preview, skim, and scan. It helps to activate our prior knowledge(our schema) and makes reading the book a little easier.

To help children understand the structure of nonfiction books, we focused on 3 structures that nonfiction writers use: description, compare/contrast, and chronological order.
Writing: The nonfiction unit is always a favorite! The children are working hard on their nonfiction books. We are all at different stages. Some are finishing their rough draft. Others have edited with me and are working on their final draft. I have some children designing their covers and adding some text features. It warms my heart to see the excitement and love of writing happening!
Science: We are going to be able to have High Touch/HighTech come back this week and teach us about Matter through experiments and activities!
