Math: I introduced the different types of word problems to the children. All the different types can be seen below. We are starting to practice creating the different types of word problems.
Also, we have worked on writing a number sentence to go with our word problems making sure to put a box around the unknown part. This helps us focus on what part of the number sentence we are looking for.
I also reviewed using the bar model to show the part-part-total or whole of a number sentence.
In order to truly understand math concepts, you first need to understand your math thinking. One of the things we work on in second grade is showing our math thinking. The 3 main ways we have been talking about so far is using pictures, words, or numbers.
Reading: The Schoolwide launch has been introducing some of the important reading strategies we will continue to revisit and delve deeper into as the year progress. I introduce each strategy during a mini-lesson using a book. The strategies we have focused on so far are: making connections, visualizing, and inferring.
Writing: We have been talking about sentences and what a sentence needs. I have done a few activities to help us try to understand the two main parts of a sentence-subject and predicate. We will be starting our first unit of Lucy Caulkins Writing this week: "Writing About Reading". It uses books that we have read to help children practice opinion writing.
Science: Last week, I showed the children a Brainpop Jr. video about Earth. We will be starting our first science unit called: Processes that Shape Earth.
Until next time...
